The Issachar Center for Urban Leadership’s apprenticeship program began in 1998 as a collaborative effort of Mile High Ministries and several local churches. We will be accepting a new class of 12-14 apprentices to start in the fall of 2012 and are now accepting applications.

The Five Components of the Issachar apprenticeship

LIVING IN COMMUNITY

The apprenticeship is a residential experience, which means that all of the apprentices live at the Issachar Center for their first two years in the program.  This is one of the most valuable pieces of the program because it creates community and shapes us as relational leaders.

ACADEMICS

All apprentices will be students at a local college or vocational training program.  We place a high value on completing a post-high school degree, so we expect apprentices to dedicate significant hours each week to homework and study, attain at least a 3.0 GPA, and attend weekly study sessions at Issachar.

URBAN STUDIES – Leadership from Below

Another important piece of our program is learning from and about our city – and learning how to become effective local leaders.   We meet one evening a week to eat together, study our community, and discuss current events – learning together how to respond in order to fully live out our mission of “knowing what God’s people should do.”

SPIRITUAL FORMATION – Leadership from Within

We are dedicated to a process of spiritual formation: being formed in the image of Christ for the transformation of the world.  We meet one morning a week – learning to follow Jesus together through self-discovery, study, and group mentoring.

VOCATIONAL EXPLORATION

No amount of teaching, reading, or encouragement about leadership is meaningful without the opportunity to actually practice such leadership: we learn to lead by leading. We will walk each apprentice through a process of exploring their calling – finding the work that ‘sets their soul on fire’.   As part of their work-study, each apprentice will invest 8-10 hours a week in vocational exploration.
