We believe that apprentices learn to lead by engaging their communities, so our vocational exploration process will introduce apprentices to leaders and organizations throughout our community, guide apprentices in considering their own gifts and calling, and place apprentices in strategic internships.

Every Friday morning, we meet from 8:00 - 11:00 for spiritual formation - which we call "Leadership from Within."  These times combine self-discover (personality tests, spiritual autobiography) with bible study, discipleship training, and spiritual disciplines in community to spiritually prepare apprentices for leadership and service.

We consider education a central part of the apprenticeship program and expect apprentices to make school a priority.  All apprentices are enrolled in a college or trade school and are expected to attain a 3.0 GPA each semester.  We have an academic coach that meets weekly with apprentices, and all apprentices attend a weekly study night until they have achieved a 3.0 GPA for two consecutive semesters.

Every Tuesday night, we meet from 5:30 - 9:00 for urban studies - which we call "Leadership from Below."  Our intention is to live with the bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other:  we study the particulars of neighborhoods, we consider broader issues affecting our communities, and we connect scripture and theology to these concerns.

The best and hardest part of the apprenticeship program is living in community.  All apprentices live at the Issachar Center during their first two school years in the program.  Men and women live separately in apartments and participate in community life through resident meetings, community chores, and 2-3 shared meals/meetings during the week.  Apprentices will receive a stipend and work-study salary to provide for living expenses, which include paying rent each month.  Each apartment has a kitchen, and the facility includes a laundry room.  Apprentices sign a residential agreement that outlines expectations and procedures.
